Radiolake

hmm.. by the looks of it, someone liked the names Radiohead and Midlake. and by the sound of it, someone likes Band of Horses. which to me, is all good, dude. you could have worse influences. this is easy to listen to, and lyrically it is simple but not too corny. good work!

The Motion Sick

It's cute and sometimes clever. btw, i love "cute" so don't think i am knocking it, but it isn't obviously taking itself seriously. why am i calling it "it"? The video is pretty funny. And I feel like this could do something if it were tweaked in areas. Sorry that sounds lame. I am not a good critic.

Rantings of Eva

hometown boys! (i will be partial because it's a band from atlanta and) they've have been working hard for years. they've been around and still put out good music. i really dig his voice. he sounds nothing like eva though. kidding. the production is pretty great too. his melodies are really really good. i am not sure about the lyrics because i need to listen more. it's one of those things that his voice is so powerful that i may not listen to the words and listen more to the melody and quality of his voice. is that wrong? obviously not since a lot of bands make it with shitty lyrics. but he is not a bad lyricist by any means. i just need to get into them more. i am rambling. besides, your asking a guy who wrote some pretty shitty lyrics in his day.....

Patrick Joseph

(he plays my kind of music i guess.) what a fucking cool voice and great great production. lyrics are cool. he's cool. except he's from pittsburg. kidding! i just hope the world can have another singer-songwriter, stoic, meloncholy dude. believe me, i am fighting for you and me both.. i kinda got distracted (by taking my ADD meds) and got lost in the songs. just let them go and its music that lends itself to that.

The Lashes

the singer is a sweetheart and their new stuff is far superior to the last record. it's ballsier in a good way. love the song "subtle changes" which is funny, because the change from the last record to the songwriting now is far from it. the dual lead harmony solo at the end is the new jam.

Rocket

(these are good friends of mine so it is hard to be critical) they are fun as shit and everyone loves fun girls. i want to take them in the studio and make the music more focused. everyone writes whatever they are feeling at the time, but sometimes it needs to co- exist on the same record with other tunes. they have the same thing that i saw in the runaways and the go-go's when they started out as scrappy punk bands in clubs in LA before they got with the right producer and made their vision a reality, to translate to the masses. and the key-tar will always.... always be timeless.

Class of Kill'em High

best band name award. musically it is pretty cool. very cobain vocals, but musically not as dark. intersting. i sound like a fucking wine critic.... nice hints of cherry and oaky strong finish.

DURESS

we have to get you a new name. it sounds like a tampon or a pill for the morning after. the one word band name thing is hard to pull off in the hipster dufus world, but i could see the midwest loving the shit out of this. you could definitely sell records to the Hinder bros and get on the radio... if that is what you want. the video for "blow" is disturbing, but i think that is what you were going for?

Kingsley

wow. miami? there are ZERO rock bands from there. good on ya man. and the fact that you don't wear latex and have 400 piercings makes it a bonus (why is that such a popular sub-culture down there? it's too fucking hot to be goth...). the video threw me because when you listen without seeing it, you would think it would be different guys doing the song. it seemed a little goofy for the type of material they do in general. but not a bad thing. fun is good! the production is pretty cool but for this type of group i would love to dirty it up a bit. not much. just a little.

Plagiarists

its a bold name. you gotta reallllllllllly be original to pull off the name without sounding pretentious. but pretention is so hot right now... pretention....not crazy about the song selections... there's only one to hear!!! i hate to make a fair judgment based on one song, but the song is definitely interesting. the production is adventurous and i appreciate where they are going with it. i just want to hear more to make sure it's not that thing like when crazytown put out that record and the only good song was the one with the chili peppers sample. ok... bad example of a band.. but whatever. it's a good song. i am talking about the song by Plagiarists... not the come my lady come come my lady one....

Radiolake

Change the name; don't want to be called Radiolake when you are obviously into Radiohead. Pretty majestic and hypnotic atmosphere they create, though. A bit of Coldplay, some Band Of Horses and maybe even a teeny-weenie pinch of The Sea and Cake and you’ve got some really nice qualities for the eager indie-crowd. Radiolake are best when they keep it delicate and sparse and intimate. When they try to hit the big refrains (and arena-crowds), they lose their originality.

The Motion Sick

There is sort of a Jonathan Richman-attitude here, in the words and singing style, which is greatly appreciated by me. Maybe there is a bit of Belle & Sebastian-twee too. Personally, I would have skipped the power-Weezer-guitar-touch, but that probably only adds commercial potential and college-rock credibility. Nice one.

Kingsley

Proper, well-behaved, etc., but also a bit boring. Needs some roughing up around the edges.

Rantings of Eva

Catchy, well executed, radio-friendly but not without energy. Too smooth and M-O-R for my taste.

Patrick Joseph

A singer-songwriter that can write a song and sing it too. Sometimes it's too tame and doesn’t grab my attention, but people that can handle the classic craftsmanship of songwriting will always earn some respect from me. Patrick has a nice voice, but what he really needs is a partner or a band that can stray him away from the sometimes unsuitable arena-rock-territories. If he could keep all songs more in the production vein of "Don't Believe It," he might be a nice addition to other similar artists like Richard Swift. M. Ward should produce him.

Loaded Zero

I like the acoustic grunge, unplugged Nirvana-style, more than the full-on revival. But overall, not my thing.

Plagiarists

I love the Television-guitars on their song "Church." There is a weird mix of styles here and an angularity which I really enjoy. The glockenspiel-riff mixed with the guitar is nice; good bass and vocals too. Modern rock without being boring. Also went to their My Space to check out their other songs and they hold up and also add some other flavors. Especially the way they arrange the guitars are impressive. Like the pretty lo-fi sound. They should NOT go and record expensive and become Death Cab For Cutie mark 2.

Pedestrian X

Has the right attitude for the kind of thing they are pursuing.

Diamond AKA DaLordOfDaRainbows

My hip-hop-knowledge is not great, but I still would agree that Diamond has a great swinging flow with her rhymes (especially on "Alright") and there are also some nice hooks in the musical backing and in the choruses. The best of luck.

The Brainbell Janglers

Lists The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin as influences and it shows. I'm certain they are a good rocking bar band. I'd love to see them in my local pub after a couple of beers.

The Lashes

Pure fun, straight ahead powerful pop full of hooks and energy. Takes me straight back to the early nineties of The Posies and Teenage Fanclub (or maybe the swedish Wannadies); a great chorus and a distortion pedal.

Rocket

Mix Bangles with Runaways and you might come close. This is bubblegum-pop-punk-trash and it's delivered just right, keeping it simple with tongue-in-cheek but still kicking ass and delivering perfect pop like "Suzanne", "Something is wrong with me " and "I Wanna Love You".

Class of Kill'em High

Sounds ready to go out there and fight with the best of them on stages of all sizes. Great sound and interesting mixture of styles. Classic rock, pop, blues and psychedelica mixed with shoegaze, garage and other indie-flavors. A bit like a less lazy Brian Jonestown Massacre. Feel like one of those bands I might not listen to at home that much but which I would really enjoy live at a packed club.

RAGS2RICHES

Swinging stuff. I really like the distorted dirty sound of "4 Eva Rollin" but "Easier said than done" is the true hit here. These guys are pros.

Brian Springer

Brian needs a band, a producer and most desperately he needs to swap his terrible drum machine for the real thing. But apart from all this I do like the vocals, the songwriting, the style. And maybe the overall skew mode of the demos actually adds a bit of a Daniel Johnston-spooky weirdness, however crappy they might be.

Hillshafer

Sounds like grunge; never my thing, I guess.

The Radio Knights

With the right producer this is radio-friendly M-O-R-rock that can go far. The problem might be it sounds too much like it’s trying too hard to be successful.

DURESS

There are some nice riffs here and some nice vocals too, especially in the softer parts. They have commercial potential but it's nothing I would listen to.

VIZIONZ

Not really my kind of thing, but the pure power and basic dirty RRROCK energy I really like. And it even has a pop vein somewhere. It's good that it's a bit amateurish and not perfectly played. It adds to the charm.

Cry to the Blind

Cry to the Blind does the kind of heavy-mainstream-rock that is so big and popular among the MTV-viewers. That said they could go far. On the other hand, do we need another band like this?

Mark Alan Dooley

What should one call this; heavy-jazz-progressive-folk-pop maybe? Mark is original but he doesn’t always mix it up for his own best interests. Too weird for me.

Wonderfool

Wonderfool has secured its place among other powerpop-acts on the "Grandchildren of the Nuggets"-box-set one day. I wish they were more lo-fi and less grungey though. They have the songs but the execution is not right up my alley. A bit too flashy and smooth.

Dan Sindel

Dan definitely has an original way of playing march-music like Sousa and classical hits in a new distorted guitar-hero way. On a local level I can see it as a cult act, but I think the potential ends there.

UnEasy

I'm sure this band is competent in what they do, but I know too little (nothing) about their type of music to be able to tell in an adequate way.

Radiolake

radiohead, midlake, morning lake, tv on the radio. what is it with lakes and radios? sounds like what might have happened if jeff tweedy had grown up in the rainy northwest. reminiscent of both band of horses and death cab for cutie, holds its own with laid-back vocals over simple riffs and a steady beat....

The Motion Sick

Super-derivative but fun, and what's not derivative these days. charming, hook-heavy, manages to lay down social commentary over their hand-claps (always good), we like harmonies. lyrics inspired by kurt vonnegut and twin peaks. indie poppy, bitey and i likey.

Kingsley

straight-up rock. readymade for mtv. these guys have it down, dude. but i'm bored by the disaffection.

Rantings of Eva

solid guitar poppppp, unerringly solid without coming off as calculated, sounds like phoenix and the shins sat down for a drink together. these lyrics (the ones i can make out,) i like, they do not sound full of shit and that makes me happy.

Plagiarists

this reminds me of cutting class & taking off in a borrowed car with the windows down, speeding through mostly-empty roads in september when the weather is crisper than summer and you're on your way to meet someone for tea at an old bookstore.

Loaded Zero

this style of singing doesn't do it for me. it sounds too affected. though the voice is gorgeous, i want to hear things sounding more nekkid. but there's a lot of passion in there. passion wins points.

The Brainbell Janglers

bar rock! cowboy-bluegrass-zeppelin-inspired music to swig moonshine to.

The Lashes

yay for powerpop. sparkly summer fun, retro-rocky flair. hefty infectious hooks presented with self-assurance and a nod to 60s surf rock. even more impressive – they channel this sunny rock-n-roll vibe without straying into weezer-territory.

Class of Kill'em High

shoegazey garage rock. i actually can't think of much else to say.

Wonderfool

ziggy meets marc bolan outside max's kansas city. makes me want to break out some sequined leggings and spit on the sidewalk. space-age modern-age glam nostalgia.

Dan Sindel

dan sindel...this shit is so wack. anyone who spends time doing this obviously needs to be appreciated, for reasons i can't explain very well. dan: this needs to work out.

Loaded Zero

You’ve got perfectly nice vocals, but frankly I think the songs could be stronger. Take some more chances with your lyrical content. This kind of over-earnestness seems a little too easy. If you want to stand out from the pack, it’s best to inject some real personality into the sound.

Plagiarists

This is all very well done, but aside from the compelling guitar solo, it doesn’t sound particularly distinctive. Good luck.

Class of Kill'em High

Now THIS is cool! I like how “Ratt Disease” conjures up both a ‘50s bobby soxers tune and a Who raveup--all coated with a nice filthy layer of shoegaze. Very nicely done.

The Radio Knights

Commercially you can do worse than try to sound like Maroon 5, but this isn't up my alley. It's well played and sung but seems to lack any real personality to set it apart from the countless other bands mining similar terrain. Good luck in the competition.

The Brainbell Janglers

Nice stuff, guys. Especially “Lessons.” That kind of dirty guitar riff and unhinged vocal always appeal to me. I like the ’60s psych on the other tracks as well. There’s nothing new here, but you guys certainly do it well.

Rocket

Considering that bio, you seem to have a nice head start. I like that your stuff is primitive and simple, but you manage to make an oft-imitated sound your own. “I Wanna Love You” is especially catchy. You remind me of the Muffs; I bet you hear that a lot. Also, you guys have a great look; the whole package, as it were. Very impressive.

The Lashes

I like the roaring power pop and the great choruses. I sense a real showman’s attitude in your performance; I bet you’re wild live. I see you guys have been around for a while. You guys should be huge. You already sound it.

Wonderfool

I love that you guys mention Soulwax as an influence—they’re one of my favorite under-known bands. I definitely hear a bit of Much Against Everyone’s Advice in Venus to Vertigo and Bright Star Hope—that mix of pleasant pop and hard-rock dynamics. This stuff is so slick and well-constructed. Very impressive. But, sorry, that band name is pretty terribool.

The Motion Sick

30 Lives is a very catch and clever track. The carnivalesque keyboards and handclaps are nice touches--nice to see you guys are thinking beyond the conventional. I could definitely imagine hearing that track on the radio (or maybe in a commercial). The self-deprecating lyrics on Pre-existing Condition and Satellite are very funny. Great work!

Rantings of Eva

Now that’s one unwieldy band name. I have to say, I’m normally not a fan of this style of keening, squeaky clean vocals, but you have a very full, produced sound that I think will appeal to a lot of people. It’s super melodic and that guitar on Sirens reminds of the Killers. Good luck.

Patrick Joseph

I like the grit in your vocals and your songwriting is very strong. Nice to see that you give as much thought to your lyrics as you do to the instrumentation. That you did this all yourself makes this doubly impressive. Best of luck.

Radiolake

Seems to me like someone has been listening to a little Death Cab. I like your vocals, but the lyrics seem a bit generic and vague, and the songs take a while to not go anywhere. You guys have a lot of potential, but I’d like to hear you take some chances with your words and come up with some stronger hooks. Tons of bands do this same kind of thing—and better. And, sorry, but that band name is not going to do you any favors. Good luck.
