3000FLARES: A dull hook starts with the bell ring of this good humor man but he's in the wrong neighborhood to deliver ice cream ... then a short run of Reznoresque resonations help to recover your interest until you realize the influence of an overdose of Prozac .. soon the expectation of that familiar sound and vibe is vanquished by the real song that starts, but in an entirely different direction expected from the dull hook .. the melody and limited vocal range actually isn't too bad .. but then the boy eats awkward lyrics again that fight the flow of the music (ie, words like "occupation") .. I like the repeated blast of brass band and sax .. but then overall, the song lacks aesthetic balance because the musical variety (different paths, breaks, contrasts, texture, etc.) lacks sufficient continuity and connection to satisfy the expectation of musical unity, direction, and flow, especially since the song is too short to work out the various aspects of this music from beginning to end. And so the end doesn't finish the beginning, and the listener is left with musical tension that he is unable to resolve.
(My review of EUNUCH alluded to the same problems of awkward lyrics and annoying sounds.) On the positive side, I like the edgy vocal tone and style of this band, as well as their creativity. So I give them much credit and respect for daring to do something different and unique that's more difficult and challenging to do well. I think they are evolving something special but aren't quite there yet. Best wishes for success... I look forward to hearing anything new that you do.

Is that a comment or a press clipping from Dave Allen?

Thought that the idea of the song was clever and aided by the video. I think that this shows a lot of promise but needs to stay original and not drift off into Simple Kid/Beck/ John Ozacka land. I know, you are saying "Who is John Ozacka?" - exactly.

i really liked this song and think the band has great potential. though, i felt the instrumentals overpowered the vocals a bit too much

Boy Eats Drum Machine are one of Portland's brightest current hopes. If rock music has been in the doldrums lately then Jon Ragel is here to save it. Although technically a one man band ala Beck, Trent Reznor etc, Jon plays out with his very talented band mates and live these guys kick some major ass (as you might say). This is but one great song from the new CD that drops later this month. Jon is extremely talented and I doubt much will get in his way as he rises up....10 out of 10...
