Miami darlings, The Postmarks, have a fresh sound that fuses classic songwriting with the blissful vocals of chanteuse, Tim Yehezkely. Pulse is so excited that they will be playing our Miami Sound Circle event this Thursday, that we caught up with Tim to ask her a few questions. Check it out below!
Where do you look to for inspiration when you're writing? Do you think bad lyrics can ruin a song?
Most of my inspiration comes from other writers, poets, lyricists, artists, or music I enjoy, or from interesting pieces of overheard conversations I can turn into stories. Simplicity, love and nature are inspiring. I love words...they have so many layers of meaning. I love how mundane objects or places can turn into symbols full of meaning and value and I also love metaphors and trying to find new, interesting ways to say common things.
Bad lyrics can definitely ruin a song, unless English isn't the writer's first language, in which case the lyrics can be charming.
We read in Spin that you quit the school band in 8th grade. What were the first songs that you taught yourself to play?
The first song I taught myself to play was probably Ravel's Bolero on my oboe. I got bored one day practicing my sheet music, put on the CD and found myself trying to play along with it by ear. That was in the 7th or 8th grade. Aside from the instruments I played in the school band, I also liked learning Beatles songs on the guitar.
What do you think it is about the dynamic that makes your trio work?
We all have a passion for music —listening to it, playing it, creating it. We're all very serious about our collective project. We believe in it and have been willing to make sacrifices to put in the time and effort it requires to make the album, play live shows and everything in between. I think each of us goes the extra mile to make our music the best it can be and are able to reach compromises by challenging ourselves to try new things, or push ourselves just a little bit further than we thought we could go.
