Cover Story: STICKY FINGERS
Tue, Oct 23, 2007, 02:58 PMSex sells. Marilyn Monroe knew it. Justin Timberlake knows it. And the Rolling Stones mastered it as evidenced by their controversial and sexually-charged album cover for "Sticky Fingers."
The Package
The Rolling Stones commission Andy Warhol to develop an album cover with a real working zipper. This was the second time they worked with the pop artiste, rejecting his ideas for Through the Past, Darkly. Andy felt ripped off so Mick and the gang got him to do Sticky Fingers as a peace offering.
The "Package"
It surprised many to know that that the crotch-shot is not of cock-sure front man Mick Jagger but that of Jed Johnson, one of Warhol's Factory cohorts. Andy snapped the polaroid himself with a cheap camera. "He wanted someone with a nice crotch," Andy's former manager, Paul Morrissey said.
A Damaged 12 Inches
All that zippers ain't gold. The marketing department for Sticky Fingers received complaint after complaint about the physical damage to the LP itself from the zipper. The track 'Sister Morphine' was being scratched so severely the rest of the record was unplayable.
Dedos Pegajosos
Spanish dictator, General Franco, thought the cover was too raunchy and banned the snug-jeans image in Spain. Franco replaced it with a photo of a can of syrup and syrup-coated fingers, a very literal and almost more-suggestive translation to Sticky Fingers.
The Long Red Tongue
Sticky Fingers, released in 1969 marks the inauguration of The Rolling Stones' now famous "tongue logo." The years that followed (present day included) saw the lads licking eardrums (among other things, people) the world over on nearly hundreds of world tours.
