2008 HALL OF FAME INDUCTIONS

Another year, another delightfully peculiar slate of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees.

On Monday night in New York's Waldorf-Astoria hotel, the Hall recognized these lifetime contributors to the art form:

* John Mellencamp

* Madonna

* Leonard Cohen

* The Ventures (instrumental band, circa 1960s)

* The Dave Clark Five (ask your parents)

* Gamble and Huff (helped create the Philly sound)

* Little Walter (harmonica player, died many, many years ago)

VH1 will broadcast the festivities next Saturday, Mar. 22. But here's a little preview.

Apparently Madonna (rock and roller that she is) decided not to peform, but selected Iggy Pop & The Stooges to cover her songs at the ceremony. Tune in (and I could not make this up) to see ever-shirtless Iggy burn through a rocking "Ray of Light." (Meanwhile, Justin Timberlake delivered Madonna's induction speech.) Note that the Stooges have yet to be inducted into the Hall. Which is messed up. But wouldn't it disappoint you if you found out that they care?

Other performance highlights included Patti LaBelle (in an incredible dress) belting "If You Don't Know Me By Now," made famous by Gamble and Huff, and Damien Rice's light-touch take of Cohen's "Hallelujah."

Presenters of note included Billy Joel, who inducted Mellencamp, and Tom Hanks, who curiously introduced the Dave Clark Five.

Question, Nation: Who is still left out of the Hall that you think should DEFINITELY be in. Like, next year if not sooner. (Remember, an act must be at least 25 years old to be admitted to Cleveland's hallowed rock halls. And they need not rock. See: Miles Davis, Madonna, etc.)
