GIG PREVIEW: SILVER ROCKETS AT TRASH BAR

The joy of discovering new bands in New York City is not just catching the latest hyped indie upstarts, but also witnessing an amalgamation of music vets from various bands merge into a new form. Brooklyn’s Silver Rockets are clearly the latter, fronted by Dublin expatriate Paul Dillon.

Silver Rockets kicked off in 2007, a musical culmination of Dillon’s years as a songwriter for Jimi Shields’ (brother to My Bloody Valentine’s Kevin Shields) Lotus Crown, seminal innovators Mercury Rev and most recently as bassist for New York City’s own Longwave.

Thus it is more than fitting that Silver Rockets combine equal doses of shoegaze and swirling atmospherics with earnest indie rock sentiment. Listening to the band’s first and current single, “Retreat,” modern hints of Ambulance Ltd., Longwave, Dirty on Purpose and Ed Harcourt are evident.

“The inevitable comparisons are what you listen to when you grew up,” says Dillon. “I’ve always liked Lou Reed and Elliot Smith so it generally goes in that direction, and we try to add a lot of sonics on top of the song as well. We try to bring the best of all possible worlds into it, you know?”

Having also toured as guitar tech for Yo La Tengo and Sparklehorse, Dillon’s musical experience resume via Silver Rockets marks a refreshing step back to nineties song form.

The rest of Silver Rockets include music vets like guitarist Jeremy Yocum (Oceanographer), guitarist Shane Tison (Kodiak), bassist Hannah Moorhead (22s), and drummer Danny Hole (Warlocks). Vacancy signed the group six months ago, and Silver Rockets are currently in the studio fleshing out new songs. (Sample the Silver Rockets here.)

Freshly back from playing South by Southwest, and with only twenty-some gigs logged so far, Silver Rockets headline at midnight at Trash Bar in Williamsburg Friday night. Boston-based shoegazers December Sound and NYC’s the Shapes open the show.
