SHE & HIM KICK OFF MINI-TOUR, ONE DAY LATE
Wed, Apr 23, 2008, 1:30 PMTheir opening night gig was scratched due to Zooey's Deschanel's scratchy throat. But the it-girl indie actress -- the she in She & Him -- recovered (mostly) in time to play on night number two in New York last evening. And while her stage banter was delivered via sribbled messages on a note pad, Zooey and (the Him) M. Ward delivered a winning show, suggesting that this is not your father's vanity band.
Now, we all knew Zooey could sing. We've seen Elf, ok? Multiple times. And we knew she had great taste in music because we've also seen Almost Famous. Once.
But with every actor forming bands these days (check out Kevin Costner's latest playacting roots-rock project Modern West), skepticism is natural. Granted, Zooey's ludicrous hip-cute hotness, and M. Ward's indie darling status, cancel out much of that preemptive naysaying.
Seeing the pair live (along with a small backing band) seals the deal. It's unique, it's just a hair too precious, and it's a hell of a lot of fun. M. Ward got a few moments to stretch his guitar-slinger skills, and a mostly motionless Zooey got to tickle the ivories a bit. Covers were well chosen ("You Really Got A Hold On Me")and padded out the hour-long set, which also featured most of the pair's debut platter, Volume One.
See and hear for yourself if you live in these major markets:
April 23 -- New York University, New York, NY
April 29 -- Vista Theater, Los Angeles, CA
May 18 -- Oysterfest, San Francisc, CA
And expect a much-expanded slate of dates soon.
BONUS: The pair also appeared recently alongside Yo La Tengo on Late Night w/ Conan O'Brien. Check it out.
