SONIC YOUTH LIVE @ BATTERY PARK
Wed, Jul 09, 2008, 09:56 PMSonic Youth’s 2002 album Murray Street was a tribute to the events that took place on 9/11. The bands studio was on Murray sStreet, just a very short distance away from where the World Trade Center once stood. On July 4th Sonic youth made a return to their neighborhood of old and threw a free summer jam as part of the River to River festival with The Feelies in Battery Park. After a nearly 17-year absence from performing, The Feelies opened for Sonic Youth. There’s an article in the Times about how the band resurfaced for the gig at Thurston Moore’s request (guitarist of Sonic Youth) : “I had this fond memory of the Feelies always playing on American holidays,” Mr. Moore said. “I thought, ‘Why don’t we get the Feelies? Do they exist?’
The event was one for the books, the indie rock giants are still going strong with 25 years under their belt. The show was sold out to thousands; luckily I had a chance to catch the show and it was completely and totally mesmerizing. Sonic Youth put in a set leaning heavily on some classics, opening with "She Is Not Alone" going into "Silver Rocket," Where Thurston Moore threw himself into the audience during the noise section.
“Cross the Breeze", "The Sprawl" "Making the Nature Scene” and "Schizophrenia" all made it into the show. The energy never really stopped except for one moment when Kim Gordon forgot the words to the second verse of “Drunken Butterfly.” “I can remember the third verse,” Gordon said. Moore responded, “Just sing that one twice.” The band received a double encore. Sonic Youth in the park was its own firework display on Independence day.
