MORRISSEY AND MARR COLLABORATE: SORT OF

In this day and age every band seems to be reuniting for a quick money-grab tour -- even bands that you didn't know were broken up are "getting back together for one more go."

Every band, that is, except The Smiths. The legendary indie-pop band out of Manchester, UK, tops critics' and fans' polls for the reunion tour people would most like to see.

Unfortunately, all signs point to the fact that the principal members aren't budging. There have been intra-band legal entanglements that have spilt bad blood, not to mention a busy solo career for singer Morrissey, as well as guitarist Johnny Marr's current gig as a sideman in Modest Mouse.

Just an inkling of Morrissey and Marr collaboration lately has sparked buzz, however. For a new Smiths hits and rareties collection, Morrissey and Marr both logged time in preparing the track-listing, while Morrissey named the special two-disc retrospective ("The Sound of The Smiths") while Johnny Marr (and here's the bigger news) remastered the songs.

What can we say: baby steps indeed. But for those pining souls who wish to believe that they will see Morrissey and Johnny Marr onstage together again performing "This Charming Man," well, it's a start.
