RA RA RIOT ROCKS OUT ON THEIR RELEASE DA...

Many believed that the release of Ra Ra Riot's long awaited album, The Rhumb Line, was cause for celebration. Ra Ra Riot seemed to think so too and so they played a free show at Union Square's Virgin Megastore on August 19. The six-piece indie pop band got their start back in 2006 when they all met at Syracuse University. They have graduated from playing at local bars and house parties and have since moved on to open for Editor's, tour North America with Tokyo Police Club, tour the UK twice solo, and tour the U.S. on their own too which they are suiting up to do again. They have also taken the stage at some major music festivals such as South By Southwest in 2007, and more recently The Siren Festival and have collaborated with the newly famous, Vampire Weekend. These achievements were not without struggle unfortunately.
On June 3, 2007, Ra Ra Riot suffered the loss of their beloved drummer, John Pike, but has continued to thrive despite this hardship. The new cd is a tribute to that and could be described as both mournful and celebratory. They played a mere thirty minute set in Virgin and did not disappoint the well-sized turnout of fans, SU alums, and a few proud parents as well. The band was energetic and animated as usual and bounced around onstage looking somewhat like bumper cars. Afterwards, they lined up to chat with fans and old friends, pose for pictures, and autograph cds. The booklet appropriately says, "For John," and he certainly would have been proud if he had been there.
