“80’s New Wave Broadway show tunes for carnivals” is one description pinned to the music of spaz-pop engineers, New York Disco Villains. With the new release of their debut self titled CD, NYDV showcases 11 catchy oddball gems which are sure to linger in the listener’s ear long after the circus has left town. Subject matters ranging from love in a Godzilla ravaged Tokyo to finding financial security through Mary Kay products are explored through raucous group shouts, jerky time changes and a dark sense of humor, firmly rooted in pop sensibility. “(NYDV) makes music that evokes Frank Zappa, The Dresden Dolls, Ween and Richard Cheese: Appealingly quirky songs with plunky keyboards, effects-laden guitar and fun vocal harmonies.” — E. Moore, FreeTimes “The intent of this CD is, of course, not to change the face of music, but to, hopefully, add just a bit of clown make-up to that face” says front-man Clark Watson. “If one person can listen, smile, and forget their miserable job just for one note, I feel we’ve accomplished what we set out to do.” Formed in 2005 as a temporary creative outlet for former members of Columbia, SC’s loopy, neurotic rockers Pigsaw Janet, NYDV became a more permanent fixture with the addition of vocal performance major, Maggie Vaules. The band has quickly gathered a loyal following through fusing elements of jazz, lounge, new wave, electronica, and straight forward rock and roll with an energetic sideshow-like live performance.
