A brief history of a full life:
Peter Morén was born and raised in a little village named Vika
in a region of Sweden called Dalarna. At the time, Dalarna was
a landscape full of horses, mopeds, ski slopes and ice hockey,
but not much music. What little music there was consisted
of heavy metal or traditional fiddle-based folk music, both
of which had strong followings. Guided by his grandfather’s
tastes, Peter took to the latter – until he picked up his mother’s
out-of-tune guitar at the age of 10 to learn a few basic chords
with the express aim of writing pop songs in English. Although
his English was fairly rudimentary, he quickly progressed,
taking cues from influences such as The Beatles, Byrds,
Beach Boys, Kinks, and, for the sake of modernity, The
Housemartins and A-Ha (this was 1986 after all). Soon after,
he became a Dylanhead, bought a harmonica, and started
performing covers at pizzerias and parties to the bewilderment
of the local populace, who often wondered why such a young
boy was interested in playing such old songs.
At 15, Peter moved south to attend high school in Västerås.
Influenced by Ride, Teenage Fanclub, Stone Roses and other
groups of that era, he formed a band with another new arrival
in town, Björn Yttling. Later, they moved to Stockholm, where
they met a drummer named John Eriksson. The rest, as they
say, is history. After a long struggle in the musical trenches,
three albums, loads of gigs, and numerous stints at the
university and various day jobs, Peter Bjorn And John finally
met well-deserved success with Writer’s Block.

Yet, as a solo artist, Peter’s pen has never rested. He’s always
writing songs- too many songs to fit inside the scope of just one
band with three songwriters. So, in his spare time he recorded
his new solo album - The Last Tycoon. In a way this is a
throwback to his early days playing pizzerias with his acoustic
guitar. The album is stripped down (Peter plays most of the
instruments himself), and although there are certainly melodic
pop songs, the album feeds more from a folk and singer-
songwriter tradition than the eclecticism prevalent on PBJ’s
recordings. These songs came together at different times as
well, which adds to the timeless allure of The Last Tycoon:
old songs finally finding their proper place, others written
during Writer’s Block, and some coming even later. Although
the direction this time around was low-key, the album still
leaves plenty of room for strings, synthesizers, a musical saw,
vibraphones, percussion, and even a drum machine or two.
Musically, the album shares some kinship with Paul Simon,
Tim Hardin, Bert Jansch, Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci, Yo La Tengo,
Leonard Cohen, Brian Eno, John Cale, Caetano Veloso, Robyn
Hitchcock and The Go-Betweens – to name a few.
The lyrics are reminiscent of past efforts, although more
personal, filled with observations of everyday life, its problems
and resolutions; memories of childhood are mixed with a
sense of fulfillment, and the ever-present confusion that
follows as we move through later stages of life – or, in Peter’s
words, “The usual lyrical psychobabble, but with a direct and
honest approach.”
The album’s title comes from the Elia Kazan film of the same
name – an adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s unfinished final
novel. The film, like the novel, deals with failure: a failed
attempt to live the American dream, basically. The film’s main
character is married to his work, which leaves him unable to
lead any form of romantic life. The film takes place at the end
of the era where talkies began to supplant silent film.
Peter doesn’t fancy himself a magnate or anything, nor is this
a concept album. Rather, as Peter himself says, “We – that
is, people working in the music business – are also living at
the end of an era, as new forms of making and manufacturing
music emerge. In these times, I sometimes feel out of place
and old-fashioned, as my music tends to be. Also, one has
to admit that the idea of failure is enticing. In the long term,
success stories are boring. Flaws and mistakes are far more
interesting, both personally and professionally. Failure may be
the mother of all creativity and new solutions. Of course, we
all want to be successful, but, as Emily Dickinson once said,
‘Success is counted sweetest by those who never succeed. To
comprehend a nectar requires sorest need.’”
Well, tycoon or not, failure or success, Peter’s made a
record that’s beautiful and full of soul – and it’s waiting for
the world to listen.

    UPON FURTHER REVIEW:

After a few communications with marcstedman, I found that although we can't all agree on the system, that he is doing his best (and brilliantly) to keep this as fair as possible. Just like in everyday life, lots of good and fairness has to be sacrificed to keep everything in line and as fair as possible. Not to mention, there's probably a lot of things to consider that we know nothing about, nor would we understand.

His quick responses, especially the one that we got when I posted the possible cheating system, (as it was fixed within hours), has gained MY TRUST in him. Maybe not fully in Music Nation it self (as I am yet to hear from them on any topic), but in the overall system provided by marcstedman himself! He obviously has nothing to fear by responding, and THAT I HAVE TO RESPECT, as well as MARCSTEDMAN himself.

Overall, he has provided a system that allows us to show our art, and a way for us to possibly collaborate with one another, and THAT IS THE REAL SHIT!

I'm am not bowing down to anything, I am just calling it as I can possibly see it best. I think that marcstedman IS ON OUR SIDE!

    Love always, LSD

I THINK THAT EVERYONE WHO IS A MEMBER OF MuiscNation, has EARNED an explaNATION or at least an idea of how your competitions work.

There are many of us who fully support M.N and the artists here. I personally have given my all in bringing in traffic and members to support myself as well as this site. But there's a lot LOT of us who don't understand how on the last day, that most of the top 20 artists, were artists that DID NOT have an impact throughout the SPIN HOT PURSUIT comepetition, and were TOTALLY under the radar all of a sudden were the top 20 voted. Also, it is very peculiar how with the exception of about 6 artists, they all resemble the same genre or sound (if you will), as the 4 picked by MN to advance.

I've never gotten a response from MN YET, and I truly don't expect to get an answer. But please know that along with these topics, it makes you look even more GUILTY of being unfair as far as the outcome of this, and some of the other competitions hosted by Music Nation.

This public message to MN, in NO WAY, SHAPE, or FORM is meant to take ANYTHING away from the advancing artists. I TOTALLY find them to be incredible. I am in NO WAY questioning their credibility, but I AM questioning the credibility of HOW THIS COMPETITON is run, and WHOEVER runs it. LIKE I SAID, we have EARNED the right to know, and I would think that you would not want to leave a bad taste in the mouths of your supporters. You KNOW as well as I do, that I AM NOT ALONE in these thoughts and questions, it's just a matter of trying to have faith in what we support, and / or having the balls to question you.

    SINcerely, LSD.

SOCIAL COMPETENCE: Great song! No matter what critics may think - it appears you have way more supporters than haters... Its natural to think that we are all influenced by what we love an dour environment. I have one song in my cd where some have said it has a Lennon-esque quality to it. It does make me smile to hear that - although it was never my intention. I've also been told I sound like Bon Jovi which is kinda funny since I never hated the guy, but was also never a huge Bon Jovi fan - lol. Nonetheless - you have a great song here! Keep on writing friend - and please stop in sometime and give me a critique! Greg Esparza

Today's Spotlight / salute, brought to you by LSD: (PLEASE READ ALL OF IT. IT'S ABOUT YOU)

Wow. I just woke up from only about a couple hours of sleep, and I don't mainline speed anymore, so please excuse my lame wording. Okay, first off I wanna say that you all know that since we are in the dark at the moment, that I 100% share your feelings in multiple "genres", if you will.

Be strong, and know that although this was an absolute grueling competition, and that most of us worked very hard, that our work HAS NOT BEEN IN VAIN. We have all been heard by more people in far away places, that we could have ever hoped for. PLUS (big plus) obviously THIS WILL NOT BE THE LAST COMPETITION here at MN. Lots, lots, LOTS more to come. We also learned soooo much about ourselves and eachother. The collaboration potential is amazing as well. All in all...............FREE PROMO BABY!!!

Ahhhhhhhh, but now comes the absolute most important part of this comment. You ready? Here it comes.....................

LSD's spotlight salutes (A very VERY special one):

If you notice below, there are no links, nor are there names. If you also will notice, you as well as I, in an unselfish quest to explore new artists, probably haven't heard your own music in a while. Or not in depth anyway. In this, it is very EASY to forget what you think about YOURSELF, how you feel about your music, and how great you are, along with your absolute endless potential. Especially after hearing some of there fucking geniuses here at MN. So, the music I want you to focus on today, and the music I am saluting is very simple, and you won't have to go far to hear it either.

Put on headphones, and as loud as you can, listen to yourselves! This is the music that I mostly recommend for you to hear! It is also the music that I can guarantee you'll find to be just what you're looking for. Feel it just like the day you wrote it. The emotions of love, anger, joy, dedication, the person you wrote it for or about, etc, etc, etc....... as the magic of these songs are the ENDLESSNESS of them.

That's my word for today. Thank you for EVERYTHING ladies and gents. The "Nation" loves you!!!
