About Sirens Sister: From Seattle Washington. 4 friends who want to make beautiful and romantic music for everyone to fall in love to.

As far as band mission statements go, what could be easier, right? Sirens Sister, who actually are four friends and vets of the Seattle music scene, have fulfilled their rather grandiose promise. The band's debut album, Echoes from the Ocean Floor, is at once loud, dynamic, bold ... and yet, also incredibly intimate and romantic. Only a few bands come to mind who have pulled off this kind of dichotomy: the Smashing Pumpkins, The Cure, U2 ... "Yeah, U2, they've always been a major influence on me," says Zach Davidson, the lead singer of Sirens Sister (Davidson also insists that A-ha, Siouxise and the Banshees and Roy Orbison are as equally influential to him, but we'll let that go for now). "Actually, I think I started this with the idea that music today isn't really positive or romantic, and there are no musicians writing actual poetry. I just hear a lot of negativity and clever one-liners." Enter Davidson and his bandmates, who actually have all worked together in other Seattle bands, some big, some small. Though Sirens Sister only formed late last year, the group quickly made a name around the Pacific Northwest, thanks to a raucous live show and an increasingly popular Myspace page. By the time the band was ready to record this year, they had stockpiled more than a dozen songs ... and they ripped through the recording session in less than four weeks. "Thankfully, most of us can play really well," laughs Davidson. You can hear it on the record: the band may be living life on an indie label and a tight schedule, but their music sounds positively gigantic. And it flows in different directions, from the vibrant first single "Hold On" to the epic piano ballad ("So Long") to Davidson's favorite, a self-described "Tex-Mex ranchero, Calexico-meets-Chris Issak type" track entitled "You're So Cruel." Add in some big guitar rock, a few swooping keyboards and Davidson's vocal delivery (think Bono, Muse, Roger Daltrey) and you've got an underground record that feels contemporary, classic and electrifying. While recording went quickly, it wasn't necessarily easy. For example, the two gorgeous piano tracks on the album acted as a litmus test for the singer. "I had to teach myself how to play," he admits, laughing. "I spent hours and hours and hours on it. I'd play those songs twenty times in a row with the band, just to get it right. And, admittedly, they're pretty easy songs, too." The band has already shot a video for "Hold On", and after playing the monstrous Bumbershoot Festival in September, plan to head out on the road in the fall. While the band isn't expecting world domination ("I've always done our merch, and I'm our booking agent," says Zach), they do think they've already accomplished several of their musical goals. "I tried to make this record really candid, and nurture a positive side to my music," says Davidson. "It's love songs. Before, everything I wrote was from a poison pen." He pauses. "But these songs aren't necessarily candy. There's some break-up stuff, some gloom, metaphysical reflections of dreams. But overall, there's a lot of underlying positivity and romance there." The Sirens Sister FAQ (Questions They'll Answer So You Don't Have to Ask) On the band's name: "We were just going to call it Sister, but there's a female Christian folk duo and a punk band with that name. Siren was taken by a Peter Gabriel cover band. So we got screwed. But the name ...I love Greek mythology, and both the name we came up with and our title kind of reminded me of Odysseus. It puts all the songs in context." On Influences: "Anything I like, people tend to hate. I mean, I love the new Echo and the Bunnymen record. I think it's one of their best albums. That does make me kind of odd." On Playing for the Kids: "We rock the teenage dance circuit. I'm starting to feel like we're the Elks lodge house band."

    Here we come, walkin'
Down the street. We get the funniest looks from Ev'ry one we meet. Hey, hey, we're the Monkees And people say we monkey around. But we're too busy singing To put anybody down. We go wherever we want to, Do what we like to do We don't have time to get restless, There's always something new. Hey, hey, we're the Monkees And people say we monkey around. But we're too busy singing To put anybody down. We're just tryin' to be friendly, Come and watch us sing and play, We're the young gneration, And we've got something to say. Any time, Or anywhere, Just look over your shoulder Guess who'll be standing there [ (Theme From) The Monkees lyrics found on http://www.completealbumlyrics.com ] Hey, hey, we're the Monkees And people say we monkey around. I love your music! At 48, am I supposed to? Still the U2 in me says How Long? If we can't start tonight? Too soon to tell, I know as I have slipped past that older part. Cool production, as slick as any on the radio I've heard. Nice is as Closer & Closer gets! I should like to hear all these other songs I have not heard. Good luck to you. - Mark
