March 28, 2007: Apples and Oranges

Well, it finally happened. After hanging near the top slot for the entire contest, Breeze'Al-Kada has at least taken home the Nation's Choice slot. Now, he'll join the likes of Seazon, T-Max and Muddy Trenchez in the next round. Surprisingly, it wasn't his polarizing "Bounce" that sealed the deal for him, instead, his latest track "Next Level" ended up taking the gold. So, instead of bouncing to the beat, I guess we'll have to get up and get down. However, I must leave this paragraph with a quote from his classic: "Here we go/With the flow/Docey doe." Okay, that may be a misquote. Anyway, congrats, Breeze. Good things come to those who work for it.
The judges meanwhile went with something a bit different. 3 Sons Productions' "Paramount" fuses flamenco guitar with a slow-motion East Coast spit. The video is beautiful and all three judges keyed in on that. Nelly said that "the video makes the song." Not bad, guys. Let's see if that game can take you through the next round.

March 29, 2007: Stay Positive, Stay on Top

It's Thursday. The day after hump day. The light at the end of the tunnel. Thursday's like being the next in line to buy a Playstation 3 on release day. Thursday's like finding a Boss SP-404 Sampler for $30 on Craig's list. Yeah, Thursday's pretty nice and even though instead of going home after work like everyone else, I have to lock myself into a basement and play the bass for four hours with a bunch of dudes I secretly despise, it still can't ruin my outlook.
So what am I talking about? What's my point? Stay positive, that's my point. Stay positive, that's how you do it at Music Nation. Look at last week's winner, Breeze. That guy worked hard for eight weeks. He handed out CDs and got his people to the site. If a fan didn't have computers, he'd let them register on his or give them a ride down to the Internet Garage. And even when he didn't lock it up after the first few shots, he kept positive.
So regardless of who wins this week, second and third place should keep it going. This week is definitely anybody's game. With the top slots swapping back and forth, it's impossible to guess whose winning. Rounding the leader board out in third place is the beautiful A'Wun's confident R&B track, Man Like That. In second, we've got Z's Flush, a hilarious tribute to the convenience of flushing a toilet. I'm not kidding. I've already started taking his advice. Wearing the crown right now is Momentum with Ridin' Low. Charged with religious imagery, Momentum anchors his spiritual proclamation to an enunciation of hip hop's beginnings.
Regardless of which of our three top artists are declared this week's winners (or if a dark horse makes a weekend surge), they've all showed they've got what it takes to win. Let's hope the runners up take last week's winner's example and keep rolling on, staying positive and working for those final spots.
