It's been a summer. 08/31/2007 07:22 PM
So, the summer is coming to a close. School starts back up on Tuesday. Usually, by this time, I am feeling at least a little bit ready to take it on. Right now, though, I really don't feel that my summer was as...summery? as I would've liked it to be. Which doesn't mean I didn't have a great one by any means; it just means that I didn't spend summer the way I typically spend it. I have a pool and I swam in it maybe 4-5 times? Maybe that's what I'll do tonight...
It's been a blast, though. I followed my dream tour, made some new and established pre-existing friendships, ate a lot of good food (thanks, NY Restaurant Week!), went to several places I never thought I'd see, had a great interning experience, decided that I was destined to be a Mac user all along, saw some amazing shows...and so much more. That's only an extremely small fraction.
But, come Tuesday, I'll be back at Rutgers, doing the same old thing, pursuing the same ol' journalism degree, hanging with the same ol' folks, "studying" in the same ol' buildings, taking the same ol' buses in the same ol' city that's only ten minutes from my same ol' house. Sorry for the cliche and obnoxious paragraph; but I think it got the point across. What it didn't convey, however, is that I like the familiarity of home and school and old friends. I love hanging out with the same people and living with my family whom I adore. I spent my entire high school (and early college) career convinced that it was everything I needed to get away from, but now it's just home and it's what I'm used to. Soon enough, I will move out and break the monotony that still traps me sometimes. But I know that I will never, ever be able to fully give those things up...no matter how far from home I go, where I work, who I am with, etc.
This is so overly serious and emotional, but that's just the way I am feeling. I have a lot of big things in store for the upcoming school year, and I'm looking forward to everything except for the school portion of it. Only three semesters left until I have to actually face the real world, find a job (that can support my subtly extravagant taste and lifestyle), get an apartment, and pretty much decide what I want to commit myself towards for the rest of my life. I don't like thinking about that, it's so final. I want to do so much more than expenses, time, and a sad thing called reality will allow.
Pretty sure that I am going to Texas in November, and most importantly, back to New Orleans. Not only do I have three semesters left until I have to face reality and permanence; but three semester left to prolong the two of them. After graduation, I may not have a chance to do these things again. Time to live it up hard.
I hope everyone had a fabulous summer. <3

Where exactly have you been? 08/16/2007 08:08 PM
I need to not look at MySpace for a few minutes. My eyeballs hurt and I am sleepy, thanks to the completely irrational traffic on the way home last night.
Tuesday night, I saw Kevin Devine. On a boat. Like, it floated in the water and moved. It was everything I dreamed it to be and more. Every single "essential" Kevin fan was by my side. The views were beautiful. The band and setlist were both ridiculously spot on. Tons of people were wasted. The boat was rocking, and I was falling all over my friends. We were loud, we were rowdy, and I loved every second of it. It was the way I was meant to see Kevin Devine, with the people I was meant to see him with. There were some creeps and bros dampering things a little bit, but I was in such a great mood that I didn't let it bother me (until one of them knocked over a bunch of gear).
Post-boat diner was awesome. We were with Katharine at the stroke of midnight, so we got to spend at least a little bit of her birthday with her. Some girl I'd never met got Katharine a cake from another table, and it was absolutely adorable and unexpected. And, as we all know, a cake never goes unappreciated.
Last night was Manchester Orchestra and Colour Revolt in Philadelphia. I'm still freaking out about it. We got to the North Star Bar without any problems, and saw Andy shortly after we arrived. Talked to him for a while, and it was soooo refreshing. We don't see him/them nearly as much as we should, but every time I talk to him, it just reaffirms how he maintains the title of the best dude ever. Like, in the history of dudes. We talked about...life, music, touring, and all of that stuff. He's meant to be from NY as far as I'm concerned.
Colour Revolt was supposed to play last, but Jesse was sick, so they played before Manchester and only performed four songs...all of which were incredible. Colour Revolt is one of those bands you don't even have to watch to be absolutely enamored with. I am equally as satisfied with my eyes closed, drinking in every note. A lot of kids don't "get" them, but that's ok. They're just sultry and soulful, it's beautiful.
Manchester was incredible, as always. They played quite a hearty number of jams, including one Right Away, Great Captain! song. That's Andy's "pretentious side project"...still need to check them out further.
After the show, we went to the pub and ate and hung hard. We got on the road, but once we were about to hit the New Jersey Turnpike, there was an accident and we were in park on the highway for at least 40 minutes. As a result, I got home super late, slept through my alarm, and got here much later than I was supposed to. I hate that feeling. :(
Tonight is Manchester/Colour Revolt here in NY at the Knitting Factory. There are going to be soooo many people and I am kind of anxious, but I have every intention of jamming as hard as I always do. I love these bands, ugh.
By the way, I fully endorse Kellogg's mixed berry fruit snacks. Yum!

I LIKE TO PARTY! 08/14/2007 08:29 PM
Taking a short break from the usual to discuss the going ons of this week...
Becca is meeting me here, and after I get out, we will venture over to Skyport Marina over on 23rd and FDR...do I even know where that is? But we'll meet up with pretty much everyone important, board the Half-Moon Cruise, and spend three hours circling the island while Kevin Devine and the Goddamn Band ON A BOAT! Allison, Kinja, Mike, Jaclynn...basically, everyone is going to be there. I'm stoked, obviously, but also feeling a little queasy (which is good before getting on a boat).
Tomorrow, we're off to Philly for Manchester Orchestra and Colour Revolt at Northstar Bar. One of my favorite venues, two bands I absolutely adore. More Kinja! Post-show Pub is sure to follow. For those who haven't heard of it...the Great American Diner and Pub is this great place outside of Philly, and they serve their spinach-artichoke dip in a bread bowl with SOFT PRETZELS! I'm going to be in an awesome food coma.
Manchester Orchestra/Colour Revolt comes to Knitting Factory in New York on Thursday, so if you're in the area and know how to hang and jam hard, I'll be there right along with you.
Hopefully videos/photos will be taken at these shows, as well as Limbeck/Format next week. Summer is rapidly coming to a close, and it's heartbreaking. I haven't utilized my pool or firepit nearly enough. Who is up for a hang before September 4?
